a new western novel that belongs among the classics

Mr. Austin has mastered the now cliched classic western novel a la Zane Grey but has infused it with needed verve, mostly due to his cleverly effective use of first person narrative. The disarmingly humorous and breezy stream of consciousness account immediately puts the reader in the action as if it were happening in the present. I couldn't help picturing the protagonsit as exactly like the outlaw played by Jack Beutel in "The Outlaw" -- a charming and polite scamp on the wrong side of the law who is obliged to become a hero when events force it on him. A truly entertaining, fast read. Hopefully there will be more Austin books soon.

Funny and well written. Wish I could find out when his next book will be out.

great novel

i just wanted to say this is one of the better books that i have read. i am an avid louis lamour fan and this one ranks right up there with old louis. i particularly enjoyed the sense of humor that the main caracter has. i really appreciate the lack of profanity and sex. this is a book for a family library. i recomend this book to anyone that is in for a good story and a good laugh.

It is a well-written story and holds your interest

I was hooked into reading this book from the very first page. The main character was real and the action scenes were handled differently than one usually reads in a western. The love story is handled well and how the hero finally solves the mystery of the three men out to get him is a hoot. Put this book on your list to read.

A Fun Read and a Great Western Story

I loved the cover and hoped the book would live up to its promise. Instead, it exceeded its promise. This story was a real throwback to the days when Western fiction was widely popular, and I recommend it highly. It has a good natured sense of place and time, well defined characters, and a very enjoyable hero (who narrates the story). For all the violence and gun play, it is a real character-driven story (these are my favorite kind of Westerns). I am glad I gave it a chance!
