"Out of the Valley" is the story of a remarkable person and the role of his Christian faith in positively and profoundly touching the lives of numerous others. The book has a subtitle: "An amazing life story that can help you make good choices...and leave an eternal legacy." The book is about Jonathan Shine, a young man of high principle who graduates from West Point, enters the regular Army, and is killed in Vietnam. From Barry Willey's expert telling, one reads how Jon, through extraordinary will and skill, rises to meet each challenge that crosses his path and each time pulls himself up and out of a valley that would swallow many others. One is struck at how Jon builds his rising life upon the timeless Christian principles of truth, freedom, justice, and love, and is prompted to follow a similar spiritual path. In the telling of Jon's story, the author divides his observations into the following chapters: 1. Oath/Commitment 2. Senior Year at West Point - Hard Leadership Choices 3. Time in the Real Army: Ft. Benning's Infantry Basic and Ranger; Ft. Carson; Panama's Jungle School 4. The Battle 5. Eternal Legacy, as well as sections on a discipleship plan, testimonials, and acknowledgements. Following many of the chapters, the author prompts thought and discussion by adding a section touching on the following: Principles from Jon's Life; "Harder Right" Choices Jon Made; Putting and Keeping Christ at the Center; and Discussion. If you're looking for an inspiring story of how to live a good life, this is the book for you!
Great

In the book "Out of the Valley," COL (R) Barry Willey does an exceptional job of depicting how the life choices and influence of one person can impact so many others. The story of John Shine, an American hero who was killed in action in the jungles of Vietnam, is an inspirational story of one man who was willing to take the time to extend a spiritual hand to others. It really helped me understand that I really can make a big difference in the lives of others, just as Shine did. In addition to the story, COL Willey includes a plan (complete with objectives and "action steps" for each week) with which you can do a Bible study or a discipleship program of your own. The study covers everything that we as Christians need in order to ensure that we are living for Christ and making the most of our time here on earth for Him. I believe that this book is a great tool that can be used to both ensure that you are on the right track spiritually as well as to take others through a discipleship program. We are currently using it as the foundation of a small group study.
Group Study

We did a group study using this book. It gives a good solid base to anyone who is interested in learning to build a Bible Study and mentor other Christians in the faith. I would suggest working through the chapters in a small group-study format where ideas can flow freely. It focuses on some of the fundamentals of small-group Christian leadership while leaving many outlets open for creativity.
Spiritual legacy

This book is great! I loved reading about John Shine and how he was able to forever influence young men by disciplining them at the United State Military Academy (USMA). He lived as an example for the men of how Christians should live. John Shine discipled my mentors Barry Willey and Mike Noel, who then discipled me while I was at USMA. The book is easy to read and follow. There are questions at the end of each chapter that keep you focused on the material and help in developing your walk with Christ. In the end of the book, there is the discipleship program that Barry has made and used for years. The program is easy to understand and all the steps are there for anyone to follow. I used the program to disciple another young man and thus the chain that was begun by John Shine is carried forward. Great book!
An Inspiration to All...

Hearing about the amazing life story of John Shine through the book "Out of the Valley", showed me a real life example of how being devoted to helping others become disciples of Christ changes lives! Reading about how John Shine helped Barry Willey come to know Christ in a more intimate way, and how John's life truly reflected Christ is an inspiration to me to continue on towards the calling God has placed in my life. The focus of one-on-one discipling from this story, coupled with the process in my life, has shown me that the discipling relationship is a vital key to maintain growth and become a victorious christian. This book is the story of an amazing person, John Shine, who left an eternal legacy which Barry Willey carried out. The discipleship plan and action steps for growth are also amazing tools to help you encounter God in a more personal and intimate way. The story and the biblical principals within the discipleship plan are an inspiration to all!
