Book Overview

Can we receive salvation from God unless we know what it is to repent? Is it possible for a person to be a Christian without true repentance?

For the answers to such thought-provoking questions, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones turns readers to Psalm 51, which is perhaps the classic statement on repentance in all of Scripture. It not only models the process involved in receiving salvation and forgiveness for sins--from the Holy Spirit's conviction...

Biblical Christianity at it's Best

Great solid read by the Doc. The book is a group of sermons that he preached while expositing the text of Psalm 51:1-15. Whether you are a new believer or a mature believer in the faith this is a must read for you. His basic point throughout the entire book revolves around the essential marks of biblical Christianity. Many of times we rely on a system for salvation or a method to show that regeneration has taken place. Lloyd-Jones helps us to see through the superficial nonsense of "American Christianity" to see what the heart needs to have take place in order for true repentance and faith to set in. He walks through what repentance looks like and why it must take place in every true believers heart in order for them to be a true believer. If you have never repented you can not be a Christian, is his point. Also, he is David's cry for mercy, because of his sinful nature, and that God is the only deliver for him. So Jones, will take you through the heights of your sin in being our nature without the work of God, our having to go to God and God alone for this nature to receive any type of cure or satisfaction, and lastly that we must repent and desire to trun away from our sin and our old selves. I can not recommend this enough and I do hope that it helps you to examine yourself to see whether or not you are in the faith, or if you are having doubts...it will help strengthen you with the power of the word of God.

Brought me out of the depths...

Lloyd-Jones wastes no time in getting to the heart of the matter. It is incredible how we spend so much time over-analyzing the sin in our life and the affect it has on us emotionally and spiritually. This book reminded me that God's grace is deeper and more real that I can imagine and that it's not about me. What I liked most about this book is that it points to repentance as the cure but makes it incredibly attractive to do so. Why waste anymore time?

Out of the Depths--a Classic of "The Doctor"

This is an exposition of Psalm 51 from the greatest Biblical expositor of the 20th century. If anyone needs certainty about whether the Lord has begun His work of grace in their soul, MLJ provides the true meaning of repentence, not the perfectionism or be "good and try harder" that is out there.

four sermons preached by Lloyd-Jones on Repentance

The book is a collection of four sermons preached by Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones at Westminster Chapel in London in 1949. All four sermons are based on Psalm 51.I highly recommend this book. Please understand that I love to read books on the doctrine of repentance. It is not a difficult read. Here are a couple of quotes-'Do you feel God would be dealing unfairly with you if you ever found yourself in hell? If you do you have not repented. I would emphasize that the test of repentance is this, that a man having looked at himself and his own heart and life, says to himself: "I deserve nothing but hell, and if God sends me there I haven't a single complaint to make. I deserve nothing better!" ' "Repentance means that you realize that you are a guilty, vile sinner in the presence of God, that you deserve the wrath and punishment of God, that you are hell-bound. It means that you begin to realize that this thing called sin is in you and that you long to get rid of it and that you turn your back on it in very shape and form. You renounce the world whatever the cost, the world in its mind and outlook as well as its practices, and you deny yourself and take up the cross and go after Christ. Your nearest and dearest and the whole world may call you a fool or say you have religious mania, you may have to suffer financially, but it makes no difference. That is repentance."

Excellent treatment on repentance

This book is an exposition of Psalm 51. It explains sin and repentance plainly and calls believers to realize their sin and restore their relationship with God.
