Susan Tuttle has a way of creating deeply layered plots with equally complex characters and peeling away one layer at a time to weave redemptive, gratifying stories from ashes of brokenness. We are introduced to Gwen and Nate who are almost complete opposites. Gwen's backstory comes out at the beginning and her anger and bitterness explode onto the pages from the very start. She's stubborn, prickly, and self-righteous when her future plans are turned around by Nate and his dream. Nate's backstory comes out in pieces throughout the book and his gentleness, kindness, and patience really shine through as he puts his heart and soul into helping the children at his camp. There is great banter between Nate and Gwen; a nice romantic tension, as well as drama at the camp and plot twists, keeps the story moving at a good pace. I loved how Nate and Gwen had different lessons to learn about God and their faith - and such relatable lessons they are too!
I think this book is a stand alone but it felt like the second book of a series, perhaps due to the secondary characters, who are all friends of either Nate's or Gwen's, and snippets of their stories. It would be so much fun if this were a part of a series and we got to see how some of their friends turn out. If you enjoy contemporary romance, you will definitely enjoy this book.
