Sheridan, without the funds for a bus ride, and with a visit to a friend in Texas in mind, leaves the east coast with his thumb out. His Texas friend has been diagnosed with cancer and is in need of company and support, and Sheridan, tired of the dull routine his life has become, is in need of some time on the open road. Houston is his destination, but it will take a few rides to get there. Once there, he will have to make a living and get into the swing of things in the big city, as well as comfort his old girlfriend, who has been going through the loneliest and most depressing period in her life.
