Kim Vogel Sawyer is one of my favorite writers. If she is the author of the book, I don’t question what it is about, I know I will read and enjoy the story she tells. I don’t know of any other author I can say that about, but it is really the truth. She weaves stories that are full of grace and love, and I “meet” characters that work their way into my heart.
Her latest book, Ours for a Season, is a contemporary story and it deals head-on with a variety of issues that are facing our country today. Homelessness, infertility, cancer, and lives caught in the brutal hold of human trafficking are a few of the topics that are woven into the story. To hear this may make one think the book will be too “serious” to enjoy, but the thing that wraps all these issues together are the relationships shared by the lead characters.
The heart of this book is Marty and the relationships in her life. The first is her marriage to Anthony. Their union has been greatly strained by a miscarriage and the unlikelihood of their ever becoming parents. While she is dealing with all of this, a relationship from her past bursts to life once again with Brooke who is in need of a trustworthy friend to help her in her journey with cancer.
Are the subject matters serious? Yes, but that is okay. Books don’t always have to be an escape from reality. Instead they can be sources of light that help us understand our own feelings and beliefs. We can look at fictional relationships and situations to show us ways in which we need to grow and improve, and also have our hearts opened to needs around us and spur us to taking action to help others.
Ours for a Season is a wonderful story and I would be thrilled if a sequel were to be written one of these days. I hope you will read it and be blessed as well.
