Book Overview

Who is the God of the Bible? From both within the church and outside her walls the orthodox doctrine of the Holy Trinity, declared in Scripture and passed down in ecumenical creeds and local confessions of faith, is under attack. The emerging absence of a Trinitarian mind-set so prevalent in the church today has enormous implications for the future of the Christian faith. A very good introductory book to Trinitarian doctrine

I liked Peter Toon's Our Triune God: A Biblical Portrayal of the Trinity and its well-summarized introduction to the doctrine of the Trinity. Toon uses clear concise language to give a brief background of the foundations of Trinitarian doctrine, then traces the earliest hints of plurality in the Godhead in the Old Testament, the early belief in the Trinity by the apostles and early Christians in the New Testament and its disclosure (although it wasn't known as a doctrine then), and what it means to confess and believe in the Trinity today. Toon doesn't go much into the controversies facing belief for and against the Trinity, yet he does make a good effort in tracing back the origins of the formulation of the doctrine to the early Church Fathers who, in turn, first explained and expounded what the apostles believed in and wrote in the gospels and the epistles of the New Testament. I particularly liked the "For Further Reading" sections that Toon has included in each chapter. They have opened up new possibilities for study for me, especially as most of the books he includes in these sections are more in-depth treatments of that particular chapter's topic as it relates to the dogma of the Trinity. He also has footnotes/end notes in his bibliography, a select name and subject index, and a complete scriptural index (for those who love to proof text). All in all, this is a good introduction for the Christian who wants to find out why we ever believe in One God who is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Best book of the Trinity available

The Trinity is a dogma of faith we need to believe to be christians. This is the best book I have found about this delicate matter. The author is balanced and firm in his exposition and best of all, he is a traditional christian, reason why you are not going to find flaws or innovations in his exposition. The author is a reputable seminary teacher.
