Twenty-three Alaska Native elders offer candid reflections on a time of incredible cultural change. They share their stories so that others, particularly the younger generation, will understand. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I found this book to be very informative about Alaska Native Elders and their trials and tribulations throughout the early years of Alaskan history. Their stories reflect the early times when things such as subsistence were a matter of life or death. It also shows you the down side to the introduction of the Western culture to the Native people of Alaska. The insight into the torment of early Alaska by outside people is chilling. It looks at people from the Bush, people from the "city," people from the streets, to people of power. But most of all these people, no matter how much Native blood they have they are filled with pride for their Native heritage.
