Lighthouses were originally built to guide mariners in their journeys and to help them avoid hazards of the seas. These beacons have long been of interest to many. New York State has well over 100 such facilities, ranging from the classic lighthouse structures to the modern day, automated skeletal towers. When many people hear "New York" they immediately think of the city. New York is a lot more than the city. This book focuses on what is typically known as "upstate" New York ... that region of the state north of New York City and Long Island. New York borders Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence River. There are also a significant number of inland waterways in the state.
