When Smart Rountree ponders his great grandmother's seeming obsession with ceramic making, he discovers her ancestral ties to Dave the Potter and the world-famous pottery making industry of Edgefield, South Carolina. Smart discusses the racist and discriminatory practices and fear tactics that existed in the south during the 1940's which caused his great grandmother's disconnect from her family's six thousand year pottery making tradition and drove her family and many of his other relatives to flee their beloved indigenous southern homes in search of a more equitable and safe place for themselves and their family to live.
