Good Garabandal Primer

Perhaps the least understood and most controversial of all major Marian apparition citings, Garabandal is explained in the most succinct and concrete terms in Judith M. Albright's 'Our Lady at Garabandal'. Recreating the site of the pastoral Spanish town and the quiet lives of the "visionaries" and their families, Albright gives us all we need to know about the wonderous time when (allegedly, for the Catholic Church has yet to confirm the Apparitions' authenticity) "Our Lady of Mount Carmel" appeared to the children Conchita, Mari Loli, and Jacinta between the early to mid 1960's. Distinctive to Garabandal are Mary's admonition to "pray for priests" and to avoid a global chastisement "by your efforts". Seeing the visionaries ties to Padre Pio and some of the forecasts already come to fruition, the book straight-forwardly gives us reason to believe. I should also note that many of the trends cited by "Our Lady of Mount Carmel" have some parallels to the current Apparitions in Medjugore in the former Yugoslavia (another Apparition not yet confirmed by the church). 'Our Lady at Garabandal' is a fascinating read about a lesser known Marian Apparition. Albright's uncluttered prose is good at illuminating the familiar (as with all admonitions for prayer, respect, and reform) as well as less familiar material (the follow-up to the visionaries' lives, the details of the messages, and the human conversations between Jesus's mother and the three children). At a mere 101 pages, 'Our Lady at Garabandal' is a short, but illuminating tour of the Garabandal phenomena.

"I Am The Lady Of Mount Carmel!"

When you think of the numerous Marian visions that have captured the rapt attention of millions of Catholics around the world, and an ever growing number of non-Catholics I might add, the appearances that are probably least likely to come to mind is the as of series of visions as recounted by four young girls in Garabandal, Spain. These apparitions spanned an unprecedented four years beginning on June the 18th 1961 and ending on June the 18th 1965 as reported by Conchita Gonzalez, Jacinta Gonzalez, Mari Loli Mazon and Maria Cruz Gonzalez. Their claim of repeated visions and conversations with the Mary, Mother of Jesus and the Archangel Michael have yet to be officially approved by the Catholic Church , but on the other hand have not be condemned either. Personally I find the Garabandal story and the historical data available substantiating their account to be the most fascinating and at times bizarre of all Marian visions and have been sadden by the lack of ongoing scrutiny and serious evaluation of this incredible event. For those who are new to the story of Garabandal, or those who need a refresher course on the subject why not pick up a copy of `Our Lady at Garabandal' by Judith M. Albright. This slender, 101 page soft cover book does a stellar job of presenting the testimony of Conchita, Jacinta, Mari and Maria in a readable, straight forward fashion examining the events, the reaction of the community, the Churches position and most importantly the reactions and actions of the visionaries. I especially like the intimate, storytelling style taken by the author and the way she included the comments and conversations between the four visionaries, thus allowing their true life experiences to unfold more like a novel than a stiff ecclesiastical catechism. Another big plus is the inclusion of 14 pages of b/w photographs documenting these most unusual events.

A Good Primer on the Garabandal Events

Although this book lacks the spiritual depth of the other, more classic works on Garabandal, it is a very good introduction to the subject for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
