Our Girl is a time capsule. Opening it reveals memorabilia and relics of another era; a flicker in time so unique in recorded human experience, books are still being written, stories still being told, movies made, documentaries aired daily on the History Channel, even a full sixty years past its glory. Artfully combining fictional interactions and dialog with historical facts, interlaced with actual letters written by her grandfather to her grandmother, Christy Bennett builds her story, giving us an opportunity to remember life as it once was; the honor, personal commitment, loyalty, perseverance, devotion, self-discipline and a willingness to self-sacrifice that were the normal, rather than the exceptional, cultural characteristics of the period of time before, during and just after World War II. More importantly, Our Girl is a love story that assures us that true, pure, abiding love can indeed happen to mere mortals, and that otherwise ordinary people are more than capable of accomplishing extraordinary things.
A really nice story that you hate to see end. It is easy to become attached to the characters. I especially liked the photos and personal touches. A good reminder of what life was like during those difficult war years and what sacrifices were made on behalf of the generations to come. Hope there will be a sequel.

I was enchanted by this book from the moment I started reading. Our Girl is the love story of the author's grandparents during WWII. The novel takes one back to a place in time that was characterized by its decency and honorable intentions. Through the letters that her beloved grandfather wrote to her grandmother, the reader is able to embrace the joys of true love and to understand why the members of this era have been called "The Greatest Generation". The characters are captivating and the story is engrossing....like all great books, you just don't want the book to end.

I truly enjoyed this book. I found that I was drawn into the story so much that I was sad to see the book end. I wanted to know more about the characters. Reading the actual letters of correspondence was especially interesting - they demonstrate the absolute agony this couple went through during their separation. This is a wonderful and captivating love story about real people and real love during a very difficult time - war. I highly recommend this book.
Refreshing Memories

I enjoyed this book as the author told the love story of her grandparents through WWII as historical fiction. The characters are likable, the memories of that era fresh and enjoyable. There were parts that were a little slow, but well worth the read. I especially enjoyed reading actual letters that her grandfather wrote to her grandmother. Brought back memories of my letter writing during the time my husband served in VietNam. I found I wasn't quite ready to let them go when the end of the book came.
