haunting

The title story is the most haunting short story I have read in a long time. I think to find a short story as evocative I would have to go back to Joyce Carol Oates "Where Are you Going Where Have You Been?" (though stylistically they are nothing alike). I read the story of a young boy with a savant-like drawing ability and a artistic repertoire which seems to be drawn from his past life experiences as a Civil War soldier, while I was standing in a library, 25 pound backpack on my back, and was completely carried away. The writing is subtle, deeply evocative and feels more spare than it really is.
