Our Collective Life is a non-fiction memoir of a person diagnosed with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) is a condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states, are present in the one body. We are known as the Collective. There are 19 of us sharing a single body and trying to navigate our way through this one life. To an outsider or a layperson, this book may sound like a work of fiction. However as crazy as it may sound, this is our life.
I liked this book a lot. It was a different way of writing about this sensitive subject and I liked that. I really felt the pain and confusion felt by different personalities, as well as the genuine care shown by the doctor. And the self injury accounts were so descriptive it left no doubt this was 100% honest.
I also really appreciated the fact the abuse wasn’t graphic in detail. With some books it can be difficult to read some of the abuse and they can be triggering for some people. This book did not go into the abuse at all, other than vague accounts.
