Other Times Than Peace (2006) is a collection of eleven SF short stories and an introduction by the author. Two of the stories are new, one is revised, and the others were originally published between 1975 and 2001. Lambs to the Slaughter (2001) is set in the same universe as Ranks of Bronze, although the legionnaires are different persons. Men Like Us (1980) is a post-apocalyptic tale about a town that has too much power. The Day of Glory (2006) is a Hammer's Slammers story about recruiting cannon fodder. The Interrogation Team (1978) is a horror story about a Hammer's Slammers combat intelligence team gathering information from the enemy. A Death in Peace Time (2006) is another Hammer's Slammers tale about the death of Joachim Steuben. Dream in Amber (1985) is a tale of the short-lived Empire of Carausius in Roman Britain. Safe to Sea (1988) is a story about a squadron of fighters lost in space. The Murder of Halley's Comet (1989) is a collaboration with Larry Niven about an attack on the solar system. The Hunting Ground (1976) is a horror tale about an alien vampire. The False Prophet (1989) is a Vettius story about his first contact with Dama and their investigation of the death of a philosopher. A Grand Tour (2006) is the original version of a story first published in More Than Honor (1988). While the author has also written fantasy, these stories are all science fiction. Several of them are also horror within an SF setting. One reason for reading SF is that it can be combined with most other genres, including fantasy with appropriate scientific verbiage (see Gather, Darkness!). Highly recommended for Drake fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed conflict, alien creatures, and human courage. -Arthur W. Jordin
