The story of the man who made "Fonzie"

I was a visual presence at the onset of the television series "Happy Days" and still consider it one of the all-time best shows on television. The rapid emergence of the "Fonzie" character from a minor player to a star of the show was a cultural phenomenon. Although Winkler played an uneducated auto mechanic, he was in fact a well-educated actor, having earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from Yale University. This book is the story of Henry Winkler, from the struggling actor living in tight quarters with limited means, repeatedly failing his math classes to his success as a major television star. He is Jewish and his parents fled Nazi Germany as the persecutions began. When he was growing up, his father's ambition was for Winkler to take over the family lumber business. One benefit that Winkler derived from that ambition was due to his father wanting him to learn the lumber business from the ground up. During summers, Winkler was put to work at the lowest level positions so that he would appreciate all aspects of the business. This helped drive Winkler to succeed as an actor and no doubt gave him some working class perspective to bring to his "Fonzie" character. Loaded with photos and a relatively small amount of text, this book is a brief, yet reasonably thorough description of a success story. Although he came from money, Winkler worked for what he earned and succeeded through determination, a willingness to take on unusual roles and to take some chances and of course a little bit of luck.

The Other Side of Henry Winkler

I grew up with Happy Days and The Fonz. I obtained this Warner Books for $3.95 in May 1981 when it was already 5 years old. I found the book very interesting. On the cover it states: My Story by Henry Winkler. The book covers his youth, college, theater, movies & television. He addresses his family in detail, even providing photos from his Bar Mitzvah. The book shows the human side of a 70s icon. The book allows you to see that he has a true love for his family, friends, and fans. I was honored with the pleasure of meeting Henry Winkler on several occasions in 1994...he proved the book to be 100% correct...he was and still is 'very human'. His love for his family, friends and FANS is exceptional. If you are over 40 and enjoyed watching The Fonz during the original airing of Happy Days or rumbling with Butchy Weinstein in The Lords of Flatbush; this book will be very nostalgic. If you are much younger and only know Henry Winkler from reruns or Adam Sandler's THE WATERBOY, this book will show you the real person behind the character(s) he has played. THE OTHER SIDE OF HENRY WINKLER by Henry Winkler...A must read for anyone who was born prior to 1963 and a must read for any Henry Winkler fan, regardless of age.

Both sides of the fonz

As a huge Henry Winkler fan, of course i found his book to be both interesting and entertaing.
