Orphan Tales is not a book about orphans but is a selection of four short stories that never made it to the big time to be a book by themselves.
Puffins and Penguins is a trip around the Falkland Islands, scene of a war led by Margaret Thatcher against the Argentinians in 1981 when they tried to invade and capture them. It is a windswept archipelago but the wildlife is not afraid of humans so you can get really close.
Dash across Europe was edited out of Overlanding the Silk Road to make the book shorter. It cut out more than 40 pages to just single figures.
Kilimanjaro was to be included in Cape to Cairo but when I first visited the mountain, the rainy season had started so there was a lot of rain and there would be nothing to see so it didn't get a mention in that book, so I had to go back to visit it at the right time of year.
Erta Ale is a trip to a semi-permanent lava lake in Ethiopia, one of only eight in the world, It was to have been included in Cape to Cairo but it had recently erupted and the lava lake had drained and there was nothing to see.
