Excerpt: As I stepped across what I ventured was the halfway point, a new sound caught my ear: it was not the bats, nor my thumping heart, nor the sound of the footfalls before me it; it was a much more troubling sound: a rumble. I looked about and saw the lake of fire below boiling up, as if something were pushing it from underneath. The ground started to shake and rocks began crumbling all around us. "It's an earthquake!" a stout woman beside me yelled. "It's an earthquake! We'll all perish!" "Hit the ground!" I yelled. "The ground! Now!" All around me, men, women, and children jumped to the floor, as did I. I pressed my face against the ground and sunk my nails into the dirt to try to steady myself, but truly there was little dirt to grab at - it was almost all rock. The ground was shaking terribly. I heard a scream and turned my head in time to see a man's body fall into the ocean of death below. The body disintegrated within seconds, but even that was not the worst thing that I spied - worse was the fact that the fiery waters seemed to be rising - they were now a mere twenty feet away, and I could feel the heat scorching my face. And then another horrible sound struck my ears: with a terrible shriek the bats began descending, shaken from their peace by the tumbling rocks, one of which crashed down mere inches from my head. I covered my eyes to shield them from the bursting fragments of stone. When I opened them, I could see the fire below growing closer. My head turned from there to the bats, then back to the fires. Death was closing in on us from all directions! In this second amazing Winkle adventure, Winkle tells how the Pooglians were forced to relocate from their native village and embark on a dangerous underground adventure. After a harrowing trip, they find themselves in a place called Orisow. They think the worst is behind them, but the horrors they discover there soon prove to be worse than anything they've seen before. This is a short story fantasy adventure that will have you turning pages quickly and put you on the edge of your seat. If you like stories such as Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, and Journey to the Center of the Earth, you'll thoroughly enjoy this series. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Great for kids, teens, preteens, and adults who enjoy fantasy stories.
