The oldest poems in this collection I wrote during a couple periods in 2007. I count fifteen of them. They survived a countless number of title changes, reorganizations, and incomplete versions of other unpublished, unpublishable collections, when every couple years I tried to gather them up in my arms and into a book. The rest have a long fossil record that traces back to ideas, false starts, scraps, and other miscellany from the same time period and from the years after, until around 2011, simply carried forward on my back, in my heart, to the present. But I would lie telling you they were from 2007 or from 2011. Some of them date from so recently I may as well say I finished them yesterday, because some of them I did. I seem to have been unable to leave them alone, to let go, or to move on. Which means it has taken about twelve years to complete this book. I find that fact astonishing. When I think about what took so long, I think about failure.
