Gold standard debate 1870s

From the dustjacket: "The thirty-six essays here collected...were written by an American businessman for Hunt's Merchants' Magazine and the Bankers' Magazine between 1855 and 1879 in an effort to reform the banking system....they constitute an impressive critique of the basic monetary fallacies underlying fractional-reserve banking and a currency created out of bank debt.....One of the earliest to advocate the elimination of the dollar as a monetary unit, Carroll favored a return to the monetary unit as a given weight of the precious metal [gold]." Chapter titles include: The currency and the tariff; The gold of California and paper money; The export of gold, Interest and cheap currency; Attributes of money; Specie prices and results; Bankruptcy in the currency; Congressional movement in the currency question; National finance with legal tender; Price with and without value; On the Tariff and the principle of taxation; The currency theories of the day; Tariff and special taxation; Of the discount deposit; The natural sum of the nation's money; amongst other topics. A hundred and fifty years after the original publication of the author's essays, it is intriguing to see how well some people saw the debauchery of their currency through monetary expansionism without species backing. Hardback in The Volker Fund Series in the Humane Studies, 1964.
