The worldwide attempts of synthetic organic chemists to open up new territories and to reclaim the long neglected ones were highlighted at the fifth IUPAC International Symposium on Organic Synthesis held in Freiburg i. Br. (FRG) from 27-30 August, 1984. To pursue the increasingly interdisciplinary goals and activities, the Symposium organizing committee stressed emphasis on the following four main themes: modern methodology in organic synthesis, transition metals in organic synthesis, enzymatic processes in organic synthesis, and carbohydrates in organic synthesis.
