Book Overview

Orestes: A Dramatic Opera is a play written by Lewis Theobald and was first published in 1731. The play is based on the Greek myth of Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, who seeks revenge for his father's murder. Theobald's version of the story follows Orestes as he returns to Mycenae to avenge his father's death and is torn between his duty to his family and his love for Hermione, the daughter of Helen of Troy. The play is written in five acts and features a mix of spoken dialogue and musical interludes. The music was composed by Johann Christoph Pepusch, a contemporary of Theobald's. Orestes: A Dramatic Opera is considered a significant work in the history of English opera and was one of the first operas to be written entirely in English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
