The Authors accomplish exactly what they set out to do.

Dr. Dorsey and Mr. Koletzke set out to show how designer 2000 could be used in the context of an overall system development effort. As an experienced designer 2000 user, this is what makes the book the most useful to me. Not only do the authors show how to use the various parts of designer effectively, they provide a list of the missing parts - things that should be done in a good system development effort but which are not included in Designer 2000. I would recommend this book to: 1) persons with some designer experience who are attempting to use designer 2000 for serious development efforts; 2) teachers in an advanced database design class; and 3) anybody interesting in understanding the role of software design tools in modern software practice. Novices will need to spend some time working with the tool, performing the designer tutorial that comes with designer, and perhaps reading some of the other literature on database design such as Date's "An Introduction to Database Systems".Excellent book. I cannot wait for the authors to produce another edition to cover Designer 2000 version 2.1.

Outstanding and Coherent Explanation of Methodology and Tool

I've read every book about Designer that I can get may hands on and this is The Best of Breed in my opinion. The book is really 2 books in 1; an excellent description of Designer and an equally excellent explanation of a methodology in which the tools can be used. This combination of conceptual clarity and practical application is unique and provides a "forest AND the trees" approach that makes reading and re-reading the book and outstanding learning experience. I can't wait for the next iteration!

Good balance between methodology and Designer/2000 product

If you want a step by step guide to conducting a project using Oracle's Designer/2000 product, this book is IT. I was impressed with the practical tips that the authors provide for the preparation before each phase. This book is a good balance between methodology and use of the Designer/2000 product from strategy to code generation

Help for Developers using Designer/2000

Designer 2000 Handbook Dr. Paul Dorsey & Peter Koletzke A New Book Review by Maggie Tompkins The following book review appeared in the March, 1997 issue of the Kansas City Oracle User*s Group (KCOUG) newsletter and was written by the editor, Maggie Tompkins. Many of us have jumped (or been thrown) into the giant Oracle swimming pool. Our safe and comfortable mainframe or PC worlds have been left far behind. Before we can swim, we have to tread water. In fact, just to keep from drowning is quite a feat! We reach out for life preservers and tow ropes thrown by those who have already made it across the treacherous waters. One of my life lines has been the ORACLE-L list server. Two frequent contributors are Dr. Paul Dorsey and Peter Koletzke and both have answered my novice questions. When I saw that they had authored a new book for Oracle Press, Osborne McGraw-Hill, I didn*t hesitate. I called B. Dalton and said *Send me that book!*. It is Designer/2000 Handbook. Bottom line, if you are still in those troubled waters and developing systems using Designer 2000, go buy this book!! Designer/2000 Handbook is the first comprehensive text to cover Oracle*s CASE tool (Version 1.3), and it joins a fine library of texts from Oracle Press. The book covers all aspects of life cycle systems development: strategy, pre-analysis, analysis, pre-design, design, build, documentation, test, implementation, and maintenance. All of the component tools of Designer 2000 are well covered including the Repository Object Navigator (RON), the Entity Relationship Diagrammer (ERD), the Function Hierarchy Diagrammer (FHD), the Database Design Wizard (DDW), and the generators. Use of the tools is well integrated with systems development methodology. Sound advice is given on user and management issues which always develop on projects. This book is readable and practical and a must for all Oracle designers and developers. Oracle DBAs will also benefit from the overview information and appreciate the integrated nature of the Designer 2000 tools. Designer/2000 Handbook, Oracle Press, Osborne McGraw-Hill, is available at major bookstores. It can also be ordered from Buffy at the IOUG bookstore and Warren from Illuminations and both offer discounts. The next release will cover version 2.0, be somewhat expanded and include a discussion of CDM (Oracle*s new method). The authors also plan a book for O*Reilly on Developer/2000 2.0. Dr. Paul Dorsey is president of Dulcian, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in data warehousing and system development of Oracle-based systems. One of the founding members of Oracle*s Ambassador 2000 program, he is vice president of the New York Oracle Users Group and president of the International Ad Hoc Query SIG. He is one of the top presenters at Oracle user conferences, having won best paper awards for both the International Oracle User Week and East Coast Oracle conference. Peter Koletzke is an indepe
