STILL The Single Best Introduction to Ophthalmology . 3/2004

David Miller M.D. has written mystery novels under a pen name. He has a great narrative writing style that makes Ophthalmology even more fascinating and interesting than it already is!I have read and reviewed many other intro texts for teaching pruposes, but this one still stands alone. Still the best by a large margin. Nothing even comes close. This sounds a bit excessive for a textbook of Ophthalmology, but all the other books I have seen are just boring. This book really brings the subject to life dynamically. Occasionally humorous, somtimes dramatic but always interesting and very thoughtful, (and thought provoking !). Also, the illustrations are vey well done. David's forte is making the complex understandable in simple terms. Having read it, one comes away having really understood and learned the basics, in a delightfully painless way, full of insight and wisdom. I only, and have often, wished he would write an updated edition. This one still gets all the basics right, and that is not likely to change. If you really want a great introduction to this field, which you are already excited about and interested in, this book will justify your enthusiasm! ...and help bring the field into clear focus !
