The Best Compact Opera Guide Ever!

Written in the early '90s, when opera was at a low point in this country, this book fulfills many expectations and exceeds others. For one, it is a superb record guide, spotlighting the best recordings of the century up to that point. For another, it gives intelligent capsule summaries and descriptions of plots, current singers, etc. And the writer's taste, enthusiasm and writing style make it completely engaging for the novice. On top of that, it has absolutely smashing cover art by Edward Gorey!
