Openended Thoughts on 20th Century Architecture: or why an American article caused this indirect answer to a letter from Italy.

The scope of this essay is to refresh and reflect on what is known about architecture, then shed light to what happened to it in the 20th century that dismantled the Vitruvian tripartite tradition of utility, solidity and beauty into single objective architectural fashions. It then focuses on what that rupture and the 20th century phenomenon of social and physical temporariness caused to the practice, the public understanding and to the education of the architect. Last, aware that reason can only fine tune a thesis, it speculates on what could bring into accord the public understanding of architecture with the practice and the education of the architect.
