i was curious to see whether canadian quilts would be recognisably different from american quilts. while i'm not sure i could identify a quilt as canadian after reading this book, i did find the quilts beautiful, and beautifully photographed (i liked the scrap quilt shown with a 1930s touring car--clever pairing). the text is frequently fascinating, with interesting tidbits about 19th canadian life (i had the urge to kiss my central heating), but the author does indulge in a bit too much speculation about some quilts. the quilts range from 1827 to 1990. according to the author, most are privately owned and had not been previously photographed. they are grouped in chapters by style, and i particulary liked the chapter on summer quilts. there is certainly a wealth of design ideas, whether patchwork or applique, or quilting designs.
