This book traces the history of the O'Nolan sept from earliest times. Originally called the Fotharta (pronounced Fo-har-ta) the sept gave their name to the district in which they lived - Forth in Carlow. Forth is an area of about 60 square miles centred on the modern day village of Garryhill. In accordance with the ruling from Brian Borumha the High King of Ireland in 1000 A.D. the Fotharta of Carlow changed their name to O'Nuallain which was later anglicized to O'Nolan, Nolan, Nowlan and Noland. Originally a pastoral people the inhabitants of Forth were ruled by the O'Nolan kings whose extended family male members were warriors. Fr. Nolan traced the history of the sept down to the early 17th century and Art Kavanagh has attempted to trace the lineages of various sub- septs of the O'Nolans down to modern times.
