Celebrating heritage

ONLY THE BEST: Solo lo Mejor - 100 Quotations and Proverbs is a small book celebrating Spanish heritage, edited by Adrienne Avilla and Leslie Pockell. It is broken into 7 sections entitled: Life As It Is, Life As It Should Be, I'll Tell You Who You Are, Precious Things, With The Eyes of a Child, If You Respect Others, Men and Women, Walking Your Road, and Love. Each section includes reflections and words of wisdom by well-known Latino figures. One of my favorite quotes, written by Miquel De Cervantes Y Saavedra is "Don't stand in the street begging for something you are able to gain by your own efforts." It's such a powerful quote and implies that everyone is capable of success and must only find the inclination to work for it. The rest of the book is just as informative and focuses on being true to yourself, holding onto your dreams, and enjoying life. I enjoyed the quotations and proverbs in ONLY THE BEST: Solo lo Mejor - 100 Quotations and Proverbs, but wish the authors had elaborated upon each quote or proverb to further enforce the impact of this collection. Though short, it easily demonstrates the pride, passion, and a portrait of the Latino community. As a bonus, the editors include the English translation on each page, rounding out this thought-provoking look into heritage and peek into truly living ones' life. With quotes to live by, love by, and learn from, this collection is all about living. Reviewed by Tee C. Royal of The RAWSISTAZ™ Reviewers
