The book is centered around the perspectives of four girls: Violet Spring, Rose Wilson, Iris Jones, and Daisy Brown. The conflict in the beginning starts because Rose gets into a public argument with Lily Winter, Daisy's best friend. Lily had been a constant bully towards Rose, and Rose finally had enough. But this backfires when the next day, Lily is nowhere to be found. An Amber Alert is sent out, but there is not much it can do. Now, the four girls (Violet, Rose, Iris, and Daisy) must follow leads given to them by individuals in their hometown to find out where exactly Lily went. There is no trace of her disappearance. When the girls first start their investigation, they have barely anything to center their search around. But they persist. They face extreme ups, for example, Lily is briefly found outside of Iris's house. They also face downs, including Iris getting grounded, which stops her from helping her friends find Lily. The girls are determined. They know that Lily would not have just chosen to disappear. They are sure that someone else had something to do with it, but no one was willing to speak up. No matter how many times people or events would try to push them down, they always made sure to stay focused.
