After the Civil War, veteran Fred Baker heads west. Running short of money, Fred finds work in a small-town newspaper office. Soon, he learns that his cowardly former commanding officer, protected and shielded by his wealthy and powerful father, is running for a seat in the territorial legislature. When the former Colonel Winthrop stops in town during his election campaign, Fred confronts Winthrop in front of the men working for him about seeing Winthrop leaving his post during battle, claiming to be wounded, but was not. Winthrop is infuriated and does not forget. The newspaper publishes a short piece about an unnamed officer abandoning his men during battle. Meanwhile, Fred and Maggie, the lovely daughter of the general store owner, become close. There is an arson attempt on the newspaper office, and later a brutal attack on it. A fellow veteran, who worked for Winthrop after the war, has left Winthrop's employ, passes through town and tells Fred that Winthrop is now held in disgrace, disowned by his father, broke and his political career is in ruins. Winthrop blames Fred and the newspaper for his troubles. The hatred between Fred and Winthrop comes to a head in a violent attempt to rob the bank in town by Winthrop and the few remaining men with him.
