In the 1990s, nearly 140 malls were being built each year. With this big growth came intense competition. Companies worked to find ways to make their mall stand out from others. For many, carousels were the answer. Mall carousels were a mix of styles and compositions: wood, fiberglass, and aluminum. Some were antiques, others brand-new. They circled as the jewel of the mall. The growth of malls was short-lived. In 2007, for the first time in 50 years, no new malls were built in the United States.
Mall carousels are quickly disappearing, along with the malls that house them.
This is the story of the carousels in malls, both past and present, with a comprehensive list and photographs to preserve this iconic part of our history. Carousels are magic in all shapes and forms. They are a child's first encounter with a jeweled steed, and accompanied by the words, "One more ride please."
This book preserves some of the magic and memories of mall carousels.
