One Hundred Days

By: Ohwojeheri, Onoriode

A battle-weary Rwandan army fighter encounters the ethereal ghost of an enemy combatant from the Rwanda Patriotic Front on a sacred hilltop shrine. Amidst cigarette smoke and lingering regrets, their surreal dialogue delves into the brutal realities of ethnic strife, political corruption, colonial legacies, and the futility of war. As they debate justice, oppression, and the gods' indifference-Imana and Ruhanga-the living soldier grapples with guilt, illusions, and the haunting question of whether peace can ever emerge from cycles of violence. Blending raw emotion with philosophical depth, this excerpt explores how ordinary men become pawns in a nation's fractured history, where the lines between life, death, and morality blur in the shadow of genocide and rebellion.
