There are many excellent books about early Off Off-Broadway by people who weren't there. Not only was Michael McGrinder there he was a significant presence, writing and directing some of the best plays of the time, producing, lecturing, loving, drinking, occasionally brawling. Many of his friends were penniless show business geniuses who are now household names. Together, they created theatre that changed the meaning o that word, changed it indelibly, often in neighborhoods too dangerous to walk through. If you like backstage stories, kick back and enjoy a great one. If you're fond of a tale well told, Mr. McGrinder is at least as good a prose writer as he is a writer of plays, which is considerable. Here is early Off-Off from someone who lived it fully on a daily basis.
