Like most Americans, I never knew about the highland clearances in Scotland. It is a significant historical event, told from the perspective of a woman. In a very touching and personal way, the story details the impact of those terrible times on the lives of individuals and families. The writer brought the fears and bravery of her characters to life, and filled her story with details of the Scottish lifestyle and countryside in the 19th century. Well written and informative reading.
