Dr. Ruby Stone, a geologist working for the state of Texas, helps the police solve several murder mysteries while overseeing a cleanup at an abandoned recycling plant where it also happens an old historical plantation once operated. While investigating the water well of a nearby neighborhood, Ruby meets a red and white Border Collie puppy named Roo who has a nose for finding dead bodies and contamination. In the midst of a lot of heavy-handed state and local politics, Ruby finds herself backed into a corner over a lack of funds, and oh, yeah, by the way, there is a super-giant size debris pile on the site that could self-ignite at any moment and which is located in the middle of a heavily populated urban area. Ruby might lose her job if she does not do what her managers expect, but she and Roo might also lose their lives when they get too close to a crazed killer.
