David Waltner-Toews, despite his considerable scientific expertise writes with a clarity that will appeal to lay readers. His thinking is brilliant; his prose is limpid; his down-home advice is clearly based on time in the field. Additionally, he is a poet, a Mennonite and a leading researcher in the field of the epidemics of disease transferring to humans from animals due to our interactions, some of them ludicrous, with them. This is a good book for all to read, urban and rural readers alike, to help understand why SARS, avian flu and HIV are present, why other diseases are likely inevitable, though some preventable.
