It is a cold January day in Houston in 1986. Bob Buckhorn wakes to another aimless day, pouring vodka as he watches the Challenger shuttle prepare for launch. His son Jack, hungover after an all-night party, realizes he's once again failed to collect on his drug deals. Though recently graduated, Jack still lives at home with his siblings, Jennifer and Josie, and all three kids see what their parents won't admit-that their family is falling apart. Bob drinks through his days, his wife Carol drifts away with the 'peace movement, ' and the children orbit the collapse.

When the shuttle explodes on live television, it shakes something loose in all of them.

Jack is sent south on a dangerous errand. Jennifer begins a radical transformation under the influence of a rebellious lesbian teammate. And Bob, haunted by his past at NASA, must decide if there's anything left in him worth saving.
