A Must Read If You Teach Second Grade!

Whether a new teacher to second grade or a seasoned teacher changing grade levels, this book is definitely for you. The authors, second grade teachers themselves, have pulled together some great ideas and some wonderful guidelines for teaching reading and writing in a second grade classroom. They begin by reviewing what typical seven and eight year olds are capable of doing and where they are mentally and developmentally. They then set out to show you how to set up your classroom, from day one, to create a safe and supportive classroom in which reading and writing are nutrtured and cultivated. They show you how to set up a readers' and writers' workshop within your classroom, giving you insightful ideas and activities to use right away. I have tried and used many of their activities and suggestions with my own second graders and my students loved them. If you could have only one book to help you with your reading and writing program in second grade, this would be the one you'd want!
