Of the many myths that grew out of the Great War the story of Davy Geddes was perhaps the strangest. In a place where many had long since lost their faith in God, there were those who had come to believe in Geddes. A stranger among friends, he neither wrote nor received letters, was always the first to volunteer, no matter how dangerous the assignment, and yet no one could deny his luck. If an angel watched over him it was surely one of the fallen, but whether God or the Devil had put their mark on him, it was proof against the German bullets and bayonets. To fellow volunteers Pat Buchan and Abe Green he was a hero, and yet Geddes demonstrated little faith in the justness of the British cause and possessed even less regard for his own life. Where men clung doggedly to life amidst the mud and rats and barbed wire, Geddes appeared to have nowhere else to go.
