ON THE SPONGE ISLANDS - Loss and Restoration in the Aegean

By Julia Martin

"Sponges are made of sea, of everything"

When Julia Martin visits the Aegean islands of the Dodecanese, beauty and suffering seem inextricable.

On the Sponge Islands follows her journey through the region to trace the cultural and ecological legacy of sponge diving which she comes to see as a metaphor of our global condition. Her lyrical prose weaves natural history and environmental reckoning into a meditation on impermanence and interdependence.

This is a story of extinction and resilience, of loss and restoration.
