In On the Outside Looking In, Mercides goes through a lot of things, that affect her life, such as she tries to buy love when she was in high school, only to realize that she was taken for a ride and treated as a girl without feelings. She has also tried to commit suicide, because she thought her life was not worth living or she didn't know what her purpose was in life. She gets raped in college, finds out that one of the guys was HIV positive, but still relies on God through all of it. She also grew up in a biracial environment that is very hard on children. What Mercides went through in On the Outside Looking In, is something no child should endure. Bullying and shunning has become a very integral part in our society and that shouldn't happen to any child, whether she is biracial, Afro American, Latino, or of any other origin.
