On the Monastic Life is a collection of sermons on Orthodox monasticism by H.H. Pope Shenouda III, given to the monks of St Bishoy's Monastery during his house arrest in the 1980s and translated into English for the first time.
Monastic life was an integral part of Pope Shenouda, not only as a monk but also as patriarch. He was careful to spend as much time as he could in the monastery among the monks. During his years of house arrest at St Bishoy's Monastery he sat with the monks and taught them the monastic life as he himself lived it. These sermons capture that teaching.
More than a historical collection, the book is a practical and spiritual guide. Pope Shenouda speaks with simplicity, depth and fatherly wisdom about purity of heart, humility, silence, repentance, obedience, spiritual struggle and the pursuit of union with God. His words carry the authentic monastic teaching handed down from the desert tradition of the early Church, and open a window onto the daily spiritual life of the monastery.
The book is for monks and nuns, those discerning a monastic calling, clergy and theology students, and every Christian seeking a deeper life of prayer. Although first spoken to monks, its wisdom speaks to anyone who wants to give themselves more fully to Christ.
