The year is 1948 and people are trying to get back to some kind of normal after the conflict of World War Two. For Annie Ellis, this means concentrating on her role as headmistress of Nether Brompton Primary School and forgetting about the two years she spent as a secret agent in occupied France. Unfortunately, Fate has already involved her in two murder cases this year, much to the annoyance of Detective Inspector James Smart.

So, when she comes across a dying man on Skeeting Municipal Golf Course, she is determined not to get involved in unravelling his complex life and death. Warned off by Smart, and begged not to interfere by her mother, Annie tries to keep her mind on preparing for the new school year, which begins in ten days time.

But Smart seems to be pursuing the wrong suspect, and the details emerging about the victims tangled love life pique her curiosity. Drawn into the mystery, she finds Smart battling the ghosts of his own wartime past. Can the pair nail the real killer? And will they end up friends or enemies?
