Two Thumbs Up for On the Frontier with Mr., Audubon
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Brenner did an excellent job of introducing us to life in the South during the early 1800's especially as it pertained to riverboat life and plantation living. Furthermore, I was intrigued by the details presented regarding Audubon's lack of recognition and countless failures during his life as well as the unusual techniques he used to make his paintings. Also, I found myself somnewhat disappointed in his character flaws that were revealed in the account. Children will find all of these details fascinating. What an incredible opportunity to introduce some of Audubon's works as well as discuss the various character issues involved in the book. I was somewhat disappointed when I discovered the journal entry style was not fron an authentic diary, but the author assures in the afterward that she built her story around true accounts pieced together. I can't wait to read this book together with my son.
