I'm a teacher at a girls' school who wanted to find a collection of short stories that might interest 5th graders but be of literary value. I read quite a few anthologies, and this one was the first one that was perfect! The girls love the stories (as do I) and we have a lot of laughs and great discussions. We especially love "The Day Joanie Frankenhauser Became a Boy," "The Palazzo Funeral Parlor," "Emily Canarsie Has Something to Say," and "The Makeover." I also loved "The Secret Behind the Stone" and used that story with my 7th graders as it was a little more mature. Though I have favorites, I loved all the stories and poems in the book, and was so pleased to not find a single dud! It is a wonderful collection and I highly recommend it.
