Quite comprehensive

Note: I'm not a geographer and so can't vouch for the accuracy or timeliness of the information in this book. But as someone thinking of getting into geography, my reaction was: Wow, this is really comprehensive. I can't think of any topics omitted. The book is a collection of essays by some 18 geographers, each contributing in a different area. Essay titles: So... You Wanna Go to Graduate School Relations Between Geography and Other Disciplines Presenting with Pizazz: Oral Traditions in Geography Entering Academe: The Search for Jobs Ascent from the Maelstrom (your first job) Doing Geography: A Perspective on Geography in the Private Sector Geographers and Government Employment On Writing (research and writing articles) On Writing and Publishing in Human Geography: Some Personal Reflections Work of Prostitutes or Missionaries: Producing Popular Regional Geographies The Writing of Scholarly Books in Geography Writing a Textbook (by HJ de Blij) Not-So-Mysterious Secrets of Publishing Journal Articles Tips and Comments on Compiling a Multi-Authored Collection (by Martin S. Kenzer) How to Win Extramural Research Funds On the Way Toward Tenure and Promotion How Does Service Relate to Tenure and Promotion The Geographer as Administrator: Perspectives on Survival for Geography Departments As you might gather from this list, a good part of the material would also be applicable to other social science fields, like the description of life in Academe for a new professor. (Not pretty, actually.) My own favorite essay was Kenzer's, dealing with the problems of putting together a volume like this. I had thought myself about compiling an essay collection in a different field and Kenzer's tips on how to do it are invaluable. There are any number of fields where practitioners find that their work is not what they had expected when they were in school. This book should help geographers avoid that disconnect.
