The American old school, the real one, dates back to a time when love for our flag, courtesy, accountability, discretion, the traditional family, God-acknowledging faith, and a work ethic were valued.... This description may be from another edition of this product.
One of the co-authors, Pat Vardaro gave me a copy of this great book. Pat considers me "Old School" and I take it as one of the greatest complements I've ever received. I was Pat's instructor at the Maneuver Captain's Career Course at Fort Knox, KY and he exudes the lessons we should all heed from this book. I never realized how Old School I was until I read this book. I'm pretty young (in my mind) to be considered Old School, but I long and strive for the America laid out before me. Old School America is alive and well, after you read this book, you will see it all around you - it is just not a visible as we wish it were. There is hope though! The Old School lives in our homes - we just have to enable the social and moral values that this book reminds us of. We make the start in our homes, with our families, with our profession, with our schools, churches, communities! This book hasn't changed my life, but it will help me improve how I live by reminding me and reinforcing my values as American.
Fun to Read!

I bought this book during Parents Weekend at Bowdoin College. Slovenski is my freshman son's track coach. I was delighted to see traditional, time-tested values presented in an entertaining way. My son and a college friend read through the book over dinner, and it prompted some interesting comments and discussion, such as "Why is Frank Sinatra 'faux' old school?" I'm glad my son will have a college mentor who espouses these values with wit and humor!
Old School America

In a time where much of our traditional values are being eroded by moral relativism and political correctness, OLD SCHOOL AMERICA is a breath of fresh air. Reading this book made me nostalgic for times past, and fostered an appreciation for the old school. I think all students in this nation, whether in secondary school or higher education should read this book.
Old School made Fresh

This book is a refreshing mix of conservative and liberal values that comes accross as a great way to live one's life. Slovenski's chapter intros are interesting; the phrases on what things are old school are fun to read. My friends and I started thinking about other things we thought were old school and debating whether or not it was actually the case. A great gift book.
Old School in every home!

Old School America should be a "must read" for every family. The Old School is nothing new, but in today's ever progressive world, where the past is increasingly viewed as irrelevant, and intolerant, it is a reminder of a time when life meant more than "what's in it for me". Old School America is a visit to a time when the character of a person, rather than their market value, opened doors of opportunity. A time when work ethic meant doing your best regardless of any personal compensation. I had forgotten these lessons from the past - they aren't taught in school anymore and they aren't reflected in most of today's books and movies. I will read these to my children and remind them that although this present time may not place much value on the traditions of our past, they are what shaped this great nation and will ultimately decide it's future.
