Cold came first.

Orr learns the world before he has words for it. Fire must be fed. Hunger must be answered. Crying can call teeth from the dark. The dead cannot use tools, and love can look like a hard hand over a child's mouth.

When Orr finds Ash, a child with no fire and no one left to keep him warm, he does not think of rescue. He thinks only: small one, no fire, dead by morning.
