Is revenge really a dish best served cold? Or is it better to follow the belief of "turn the other cheek?" Adolescent Anthony Marsetti, struggles with these conflicting ideas. In his class at school, he is picked on by bully Phillip. Although he tries to stand up to the boy, he is constantly trounced. Finally he finds an escape in a new pup and a girl friend but then tragedy strikes when he loses a beloved member of his family. It is up to Tony to right this terrible wrong but if he follows his father's wishes, to get revenge in the Old World way, he will be in conflict with his Christian mother who wants him to forgive. And even if the boy follows his father's desire, he does not know how to accomplish that revenge. Although Sandy, the prettiest girl in his class, stays by his side, Tony's best friends betray him out of fear of the bully Phillip. Then young Marsetti stumbles upon a World War II ex-Marine and his wife who own a farm a few miles outside Tony's town of Ambridge, a steel mill center near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The old couple introduce him to the world of hard farm work, the martial arts of Mui Thai and judo, and fight training for the American Pit Bull Terrier. Gradually Anthony discovers that although Christianity teaches non-violence and forgiveness, there are times when a person must not retreat. But he also learns that there are times when revenge no longer accomplishes much of worth. The novel explores the very real world of illegal dog fighting, of martial arts training, of school bullying, of the betrayal of friends, and of young love.
